The Marton Tow & Salvage leages concluded on Thursday night with easter egg prizes proving very popular. James Gust presented the prizes on behalf of Marton Tow & Salvage.  Leagues take a break over the school holidays and our B grade tournament but the Southern Rangitikei Vet Services leagues will start on 19 May.

Womens World Squash Teams Champs:

What a great week! The tournament held in Palmerston North in December was a huge international event with 16 teams from all over the world competing.  New Zealand played well to win their pool but lost to England in the semi finals despite the best efforts of support from the crowd.  NZ then went down to Malaysia in the 3rd-4th play off which was disappointing considering they beat them in pool play!  Australia played England in the final which saw Australia win.  Sally, Jarrod and Di were team liason officers and had close contact with most of the players.  Below are some photos of the week.

Paint job for the club

Picture
Many hands make light work!
On Saturday morning a good number of club members turned out to paint the exterior of the club.  Many thanks to Lion Foundation for providing the funding for the preparation and paint and to the club members who came along and painted and to those who couldn't paint but did bring morning tea!  It only took a couple of hours to complete a huge job.

Champion of Champions:

8 players went to Levin in October to compete in 12 divisions of the the Manawatu/Wanganui/Ruapehu zone champion of champions.  At the end of a long day of squash we came home with 4 Champions; Lily Stantiall for J grade girls, Jarrod Calkin D grade men, Sally Stantiall C grade women and Di Tasker womens Masters.  The club came 2nd overall to Squashgym.

Another new life member:

The club recently celebrated the long service of David Gordon by awarding him life membership.  He joined the club in 1980 and after 30 years of regularly playing interclub, being president twice! and donating many cooked roasts for the famous Rangitikei Roast meal, as well as many other hours of work,  he was honoured.  Dave said during his speech that the club was his 'home away from home'.  With formalities over it was time to celebrate in style with other life members and newer club members, a night for all to remember!

C grade ladies at Nationals:

The C grade ladies team that competed at Nationals in Palmerston North last weekend were very fortunate in obtaining sponsorship from Southern Rangitikei Vet Services.  They were one of the best dressed teams at C grades.  Lucky they looked good because at the end of the day they only came 7th!!  The team comprising of Di Tasker, Sally Stantiall, Sharon Bryant, Stephanie Oliver, Deb Stephenson,  Jenny Pettersen, Raewyn Ross and Manager Marilyn Dolan played 5 games of squash over 3 days.  They managed to pull of a few unexpected wins and come away at the end of the event with 7th placing.  A great few days with the true meaning of graded teams event celebrated on the Saturday night.
CONGRATULATIONS goes to Jarrod Calkin who represented Squashgym at D grade nationals in Gisborne and came home with the winners trophy - well done Jarrod and the Squashgym team.

Saywell shield is home!

A strong team from Rangitikei travelled to Taihape on the Mad Tom's bus to challenge the Saywell Shield which Taihape were holding.  After a full afternoon of squash and with only 3 matches left to play the two teams were tied. With some gutsy squash from Dan Fairburn and Dominic Rayner they came away with the win and brought the shield back 'home'.  Celebrations were held until the wee small hours the next morning.  Congratulations to the team of: back row: Darren Walton, Jarrod Calkin, Dan Fairburn, Rick Nortje, Justin Lock, Wayne Ward, Sam Trotter.  Front Row: Sally Stantiall, Jono Rayner, Simon Nitschke, Sarah Lock, Bex Hartley, Danielle Stevenson, Pauline Slovak, Emily Conlon, Stu Tasker (Captain), Dominic Rayner.  Also, not pictured Camille Flack, David Gordon, Geoff Stantiall, Marie Ward and Lesley Stevenson.
Over the winter Mummy and Daddy have been taking Lily, Paige, Stella and I around the Central
District Prince J grade tournaments. Over the season I have learnt how to referee and how to
play better squash. I have meet heaps of boys and girls who have skills in squash. Over the
season I have had wins and loses. The season started in Marton and eventually finished in
Wanganui. In Wanganui I had my first win for the division. I came 4th overall for the Prince points. I am really happy with myself. I won a really cool prince squash bag.
BY molly.

Over the winter I have travelled around the Central District to play squash. Over the tournaments I have learnt
how to referee the games going on and how to play better.  Over the prince tournaments I came 6th over all I won a back pack. I really enjoyed my games with different people. I got to move up a grade.
By Paige.

Over winter I have been going to squash clubs around Marton to play the junior prince series. In

Wanganui it was the last one. The people from Marton all won a squash bag. I got a Prince, pink, backpack. I lost all my Junior Prince games, but I played well, and had fun. I enjoyed playing
and meeting new people. I learnt a lot of new skills and I can now do back hand shots. Hopefully next year I can improve and win a game. Prince has supported us a lot of times. Thank you Mum and Dad for taking me to the thetournaments.

C grade women are off to the Nationals!!

The Rangitikei C grade womens team played superchamps in Palmerston North over the weekend 16-18 July.  The team is made up of Sally Stantiall, Di Tasker, Stephanie Oliver, Sharon Bryant, Raewyn Ross, Jenny Petterson and Deb Stephenson.  The draw had 6 teams and the Rangitikei girls were seeded 5th, they had to play 5 matches during the course of the weekend and managed to win them all to become the outright winners.  They will now represent Central Squash at the Nationals which Squash gym Palmerston North are hosting mid September.  Three other Rangitikei players played superchamps for Squashgym and all won and will be going to Nationals, they are Dylan Tasker who will be travelling to Alexandra for B grade Nationals, Jake Tasker C grades at Squashgym and Jarrod Calkin who will travel to Gisborne for D grade Nationals.  We wish all these players the best for the next 6 weeks of training and fund raising.

J Grade tournament a huge success

The weather was cold and wet, but that didnʼt deter any of the young squash players from around the district who travelled to play in our local Junior Prince Series Tournament, on Sunday. There were 33 children who came to play from Wanganui, Palmerston, Taihape and Turangi, as well as players from our own club and Huntley School. They all had three games each. The standard of squash was very high and all of the parents were very impressed at the great games and the great spirit that was displayed by all players. Every player won a prize, and we would like to thank Westpac Bank for making this possible. An awesome day was had by all, players and supporters with many new juniors keen to carry on and play more tournaments throughout the district in the coming months. Who knows one of them may be the next Josh Greenfield or Shelly Kitchen.

Club loses great club man:

Picture

On Monday 24 May Brent Peacock lost his battle with cancer.  Brent joined the club in 1982 and during that time held most positions on the Committee including President and Bar Manager.  In November 2009 he was made a life member of the club, of which he was very proud.  At Brent's funeral 40 to 50 past and present squash club members formed a guard of honour with their rackets as he was bagpiped out of the hall - a great tribute to a great club member and all round 'good bugger'!

Last weekend the Rangitikei Squash Club hosted their annual B grade and below tournament.  Local entries were the highest they have been in many years with other entries coming from Palmerston North, Wanganui, Ohakea, Taihape, Feilding, Havelock North, Te Awamutu, Pahiatua and Dannevirke.

Mens division one saw in form local player Warren Mant take out the title winning all three of his matches, second was Matt Ratcliffe from the River City club in Wanganui.  Womens division one was an all Squashgym Palmerston North affair between Aroha Campbell-Bryan and Rebecca Clifford, a 5 setter final saw Rebecca the final winner.

In mens div 2 ultra-fit Frenchy Ifrah from Ohakea cleaned up the championship title with Jake Tasker (Rangitikei) runner-up.  Womens Div 2 Pauline Slovak won the consolation plate, womans div 3 Danielle Stevenson came runner-up and Natasha Hancock won the plate. Mens div 6 new Rangitikei club member Justin Lock played extremely well to make the final but was out played by Carl Matthews from Wanganui in the final, Shaun Natusch won the consolation plate in the same division.

The committee would like to thank all the new club members for the help they gave over the weekend, which contributed to the success of the tournament.

B grade tournament:

Squash-A-Thon

Picture
8pm finally at the end, David McDonald played the last game.
Jake Tasker did a 12-hour squash-a-thon on Tuesday the 13th of April from 8am to 8pm. The squash-a-thon is to help Jake fundraise for the PNBHS senior A squash tour to Australia at the end of June. He played club members of all grades ranging from J to B1, he would like to thank everyone that supported him by sponsoring and/or playing him.

First leagues for 2010 completed:

The 2010 season started with leagues in February, winners were rewarded with Easter Eggs sponsored by Graham Marshall Decorating.

We're club of the year!!!!!

Picture
At the Central Squash AGM held in early December the Rangitikei Squash Club was awarded the district "Club of the Year" award, this is the result of many hours of hard work from our committee and the continued growth in membership of our club.  Di Tasker was awarded the "Administrator of the Year" award.  There are 23 clubs in the Central Squash region and we are proud of this achievement.

One of the things to come out of the AGM that is of note to our members is that the scoring system will change; as of next year scoring will be point-a-rally (PAR) to 15.

Two new Life Members:

Picture
New life members Di Tasker and Brent Peacock
On Friday night 13 November at the conclusion of league prizegiving there was a special presentation to Di Tasker and Brent Peacock, they were recognised for their years of service to the club by being awarded Life Membership.  Both Di and Brent joined the club on 24 June 1982 and have given many years of service to the club covering all positions on the Committee during that time.
The night was made even more memorable when six of the current nine Life Members made a return to the club to celebrate with the new life members.
Club Champs were held mid September with good entries in most grades.
President Bryan Marshall was up against it in the Mens Veterans with higher graded Andy Watson and John Furness both having entered with the hopes of getting their name on the honours board. Bryan played some of the best squash he has played this season to overcome both older more experienced opponents with his straight hitting, hard running squash.
Final results: Mens Open: Dylan Tasker, Womens Open: Di Tasker, Mens Veteran: Bryan Marshall, Womens Veteran: Sally Stantiall, Womens C Grade: Di Tasker, Mens C, D & E Grades: Bruce Bowsher, Womens F Grade: Christine Wigglesworth, Mens F Grade: Glenn Weitenberg, Junior Girls: Danielle Stevenson and Junior Boys: Dylan Tasker.
These players will now go to Foxton next month to play all the other Club Champs of the district to find the ‘Champion of Champions’!
On the 9th of September the Rangitikei E Grade men’s team travelled up to Tokoroa with a few stops on the way up.  One was at the Taupo Squash Club where we watched Dylan’s first game in the B grade men’s.

When we arrived we went straight to the courts to get the key to the house that we were staying in, where we met up with the rest of our team who consists of Michael McLean, Luke Jones, Bruce Bowsher, Paul Keenan, Sam Trotter, Joel Natusch and Di Tasker as coach/manager. After a few hours rest time we went to the courts for our first game which was at 7 pm on the first night. We played Island Bay and managed to win it 4/1, our game the next day was at 12 midday where we were playing last seed Dargaville who had taken the 1st seed to 5 the night before, we only just got the win where the score was 3/2. We had our next game that night at 7pm where we were playing the first seed Eden Epsom. We only just scraped through winning 3/2 it was a great effort.

The next day we had the semi-finals against the 6 seed Tauranga where we only just lost 2/3.

On the final day we were playing off for 3rd and 4th where we had to play the 1st seed again where we only just lost 2/3. So we finished the week with 4th place so we played to our seed. I would like to thank Luke and Michael for coming from out of town to play for us; I would also thank our sponsors McIntosh Excavators and all the team members for taking time off their busy lives to represent our club.

Palmerston North hosted the NZ Secondary Schools Champs 14-16 August.  47 teams of  5 to 7 players represented schools from all over New Zealand. The Rangtitikei squash club were represented by Abbie Stantiall (PNGHS), Robbie Marshall and Jake and Dylan Tasker (PNBHS).  After a big weekend of squash PNBHS A team were third, PNGHS were 4th and PNBHS B team were 19th these placings were equal or better than their seeding.  At prizegiving a tournament team of the top 6 boys and girls were announced, Dylan Tasker and Tom Nash also from PNBHS were both named. Saywell shield heads back to Taihape:

Picture
Taihape's President Robert Auld accepts the shield from Stu Tasker
Early September was Saywell shield challenge hosted by Rangitikei.  Taihape sent 22 players to Marton and the challenge began at 1pm.  Some great games were played and with only 3 left to go Rangitikei had to win 2 of them to keep the shield.  Things were tense but unfortunately they were only able to win one and Taihape won the shield back.  Although Taihape won the shield, at the end of the day squash was the winner and and great day was had by both clubs.

August Leagues Finished:

Picture
League winners: Blair, Bruce, Laura, Camille, Bruce, Nikki, Shane & Joel
The final night of leagues finished late again due to some very tight games.  Everyone enjoyed their games and even a few old hands dusted off their rackets! The winners were rewarded with bar tabs.  Thanks must go to Club Captain Sam and Bar Manager Stu for keeping things running smoothly every week.

Prince Series Final:

Picture
Prizewinners of the Prince Players series
The Prince Players series came to and end early August with locals Sally Stantiall taking first place in the 30-39 age group and Jake Tasker coming 7th overall.
First place came right down to the wire with Chloe Mackay (Patea) and Chelsea Walls (River City) sitting on 1st and 2nd going into the final at Kawaroa Park.   With just Chelsea left to play on Sunday afternoon, Chloe had won her draw and would win if Chelsea lost her final match - there was alot of interest in her match against one of the local KP girls (I would say there was more interest in that match than the mens div 1 final)- they had a big 5 setter which Chelsea won in the end and gave her first place in the Prince series, and Chloe still had a smile on her face!!

F grade superchamps:

Picture
Mike Nash sets up the projector for the big screen
It was a huge weekend of play for the Rangitikei Club when they hosted F grade superchamps 17-20 July, play kicked off at 4pm Saturday and continued all weekend with the men finishing at 5pm Sunday.  Saturday night the big screen was once again in use for the rugby match, pick the score scratchie tickets were sold - the half time winner was Mok Karl the full time winner was the Rangitikei Squash club who bought the unsold tickets.
The women realised after being beaten 5/0 in the first two rounds that they were outclassed, from then on their games improved and they managed a 4/1 win over Wanganui and 3/2 loss to Squash Palmerston North.
The men on the other hand started off well with a close 3/2 win over Ohakune and 5/0 win over Ohakea, then their games went downhill and they lost 4/1 to Squash Palmerston North and 5/0 to the young and well coached Kawaroa Park team.
The winners for the weekend were Ohakune in the women and Kawaroa Park (New Plymouth) for the men, they will attend the national F grade finals at Hawera mid September.

E Grade Men win superchamps:

Picture
Back: Bruce, Paul, Mike,Sam Front: Jake & Luke
Last weekend the local Rangitikei E Grade Men’s Squash team attended the Central Region Squash Championship in Palmerston North. 7 teams attended from Taranaki, Wanganui, Ruapehu and Manawatu. Round robin play saw the Rangitikei team unbeaten and through to the final against a very strong Palmerston North team on Sunday. Every one played their best squash in the final with the local boys winning all five games capping off an excellent weekend and being crowned Central Squash Champions. This means the team is off to play in the National Championship in Tokoroa starting on the 9th of September. This is an excellent result for Rangitikei squash club reflecting the strength and growth the club is experiencing this year. Local woman’s C grade player Sally Stantiall was a member of the Ohakune Woman’s C grade team to win meaning Sally is also off to the national championships as well.

North Island Age Group Champs:

The North Island age group champs were held 9 – 12 July in Hamilton and local juniors Dylan and Jake attended with the Squashgym Palmerston North academy.  They had some successes with Jake playing to his seeding of 21 out of 32 in the under 15 boys, Dylan was seeded 8th out of 32 in the under 17 boys and had two incredible wins to improve his seeding to 5th.  Others from the Academy to do well were Joseph Watts and Danielle Fourie who both came runners-up in their age groups.

Successful club teams tournament:

Last weekend the Rangitikei squash club in Marton held a local teams tournament, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who participated.
The seeding was such that there was only half a point difference between fourth place and the winners after the three rounds of games! Also, Jim and Kieran, (both who had pulled up lame) had to play a game of pool to decide the second and third placing. The winning team was ‘Green’: Di, Simon, David and Bruce. Straight after prize giving we all enjoyed a scrumptious pot-luck dinner and a few bevys while we watched France deal to the All-Blacks on the big screen – thanks to Mike for sorting the projector and Jimmy the TV.

Do you like our new sign?

Last year the committee decided to update the sign on the front of the club, we think it's a great improvement!!

Watch this space, early this year we have planned renovations for downstairs and new carpet throughout, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Pub Charity.

Rangitikei represented at NZ Junior Open

Picture
Two of our junior players Dylan and Jake Tasker travelled to Auckland in the middle weekend of the school holidays to play in the NZ Junior Open.  Dylan was seeded 23rd in a 32 draw and Jake 9th in a 9 draw, they both played well above their level to improve their seedings but were unable to come home with a prize.  They were part of the 22 player squad from Central that went.

Wanganui B Grade tournament:

Picture
Easter Weekend a small contingent of Rangitikei members played the Wanganui B grade and below tournament.  Mixed results saw both Dylan and Jake Tasker win their divisions and Sally Stantiall come runner-up in hers.

Dylan won the mens division 1 and was presented with the Peter Vine Memorial trophy.  This is a tribute to Peter Vine who passed away this time last year.  Peter was in the tournament last year and when he passed away Dylan was asked to move up a division to take his place, this year Dylan won that division and the trophy – we think Peter would have appreciated that!
