Country Teams upstage their city rivals

Country Teams upstage their city rivals in Squash Interclub Round two of the MacDougalls ISL Manawatu-Wanganui premier squash interclub series travelled to Marton’s Rangitikei Squash club courts on Tuesday night. In what is proving to be one of the strongest and most even squash interclub competitions in the country, it saw the smaller country and town clubs upstage the larger city teams. Home side Rangitikei produced it’s second win of the comp and a small upset in beating defending champions SquashGym Gold 8 sets to 7 when matches were tied two all. Fresh from winning the South Taranaki Open at Hawera during the weekend, SquashGym’s Kashif Shuja was too strong for Rangitikei import, former NZ Schools player Ben Calvert. SquashGym number 2 Regan Smith fought well to subdue Dylan Tasker in 5 sets but was Taskers brother Rangitikei College student Jake Tasker that stole the match for the home side beating the much higher ranked Tyron Fourie after Rangitikei had already taken the fourth match in a forfeit.

Tararua also beat their city opponents Massey University 12 sets to 5. Tararua’s Joseph Watts, Justin Brown, Luke Jones and David Greer all won for Tararua. While NZ juniors Rebecca Barnett and Danielle Fourie competing in the men’s comp for Massey and new recruit Taylor Leabourne, all fought well and won sets for the students.

In the final and closet tie of the night, early leaders Wanganui and SquashGym Blue fought out a tight battle, with Wanganui sealing victory in the last match when Matt Rattcliffe proved too strong for Palmerston North’s Brent Foster. Wanganui took the tie 10 sets to 7, with Wanganui’s Ant Rountree also winning in 4 sets, while top pairing of Rod Bannister and Stephen Bennett took valuable sets in close losses. SquashGym Blue victors were the improving Matt Nation and former ATP tennis convert Victor Romeo.

Round 3 now travels to the Wanganui club next Tuesday, where Tararua play SquashGym Gold, SquashGym Blue take on Massey University while home side Wanganui play Rangitikei.

Overall in the other divisions of the MacDougalls Farm Equipment sponsored ISL interclub series, the rivercity club of Wanganui leads Men’s Div 1, 2 and 3, while Taihape is ahead in the Women’s division.

More FM Premier Cup Points Table (after Rd 2 – Tues 14 May)
 Wanganui 22 points
 Tararua 20
 Rangitikei 17
 SquashGym Gold 14
 SquashGym Blue 13
 Massey 8

MacDougalls ISL Premier Manawatu-Wanganui Squash Interclub gets underway.

Six teams including defending champions Palmerston North’s SquashGym compete for the premier More FM Cup in the 2013 Manawatu-Wanganui Interclub series that kicked off at SquashGym’s Linton Street courts on Tuesday night. In one of the strongest competitions in the country, strength is spread evenly with 10 A graders playing for the 6 club sides including Wanganui, Tararua, Rangitikei, 2 sides from SquashGym and a Massey University selection. They compete over a 6 week period at club venues across the region with finals in Palmerston North on Tuesday 11th June.
Round 1 saw the two SquashGym teams square off, with the top ranked SquashGym Gold side beating their clubmates SquashGym Blue 7 sets to 6 when they were tied up at 2 matches all. Gold’s former NZ champion recently returned from Europe, Kashif Shuja, and former NZ schools rep Regan Smith won in straight sets with the father and son duo of Brent Foster and Freyberg student Daniel Foster, making his premier debut, winning for the Blue side.
Wanganui showed plenty of depth in winning their tie against a young Massey University selection 4 matches to 0, and look early favourites to take the 2013 title. Led by the experienced Rod Bannister just back from Australia, his Wanganui line-up of Stephen Bennett, Matt Rattcliffe and Ant Rountree took total control of their matches winning 12 sets to 3, with only Tom Nash and former NZ junior Danielle Fourie competing in the men’s comp for Massey, winning sets for the students.
In the final and closet tie of the night, Rangitikei and Tararua fought out a battle royale, with it going right down to the last match and set, where Marton’s Jake Tasker, fought back from match ball down to win the tie for Rangitikei against Tararua’s David Greer. Rangitikei took the tie 9 sets to 8, with Jakes older brother Dylan winning in straight sets, while top Tararua duo of Joseph Watts and Luke Jones won for Tararua.
Round 2 travels to the Rangitikei club at Marton next Tuesday, where Tararua play Massey, SquashGym Gold take on home side Rangitikei and Wanganui play SquashGym Blue.
Overall approx 40 teams (or 260 people) compete each week in the MacDougalls Farm Equipment sponsored ISL interclub series, with grades ranging from F grade thru to A1 grade in the Premier division, from the 14 clubs within Manawatu-Wanganui in both men’s and women’s divisions. Central’s other zone in Taranaki has similar numbers, that also compete weekly in a Taranaki based competition with the two zones combining for regional playoffs in late September.

Rainbow Squash Teams Tournament:

On the weekend 26,27 April the Rangitikei Rainbow Squash Teams Tournament sponsored by McLwaines Mitre 10 was held.

Four competitive teams were assembled with each player playing three games to go towards their teams total. Team challenges (quizzes, puzzles etc)also accumulated points for an overall champion team.

The red team (Tim Mattocks, Sally Stantiall, Joce Broadbelt, Biddy Rogers and Max Murphy) were too strong throughout their team and won the squash. The yellow team (Blair Robinson, Simon Nitschke, Stu Tasker, Angela Gust and Heather Plank) proved to be the most multi talented team taking the overall champion team when the intellectual challenge results were added to the squash.

The wearing of team colours was encouraged and Stu Tasker set the scene on Friday with his yellow ensemble of yellow shoes, shorts, warm up shirt, playing shirt, racket and.........gloves. All teams came dressed to impress on Saturday. The blue team (Dan Fairburn, Tarsh Hancock, Pauline Slovak, Paige Stantiall and Mel Andrews) went all out with body paint and smurf uniforms. This team won the best dressed team but had to spend extra time washing body paint off the court walls and themselves after play had finished. Everyone looked fantastic but this teams effort was exceptional – well done.

Player of the tournament was Angela Gust and match of the weekend was between Jordyn Rogers- Holden and Mel Andrews.

Best dressed individuals  were Stu Tasker and James Gust. James also picked up the the title of the loudest person. A title he won with consummate ease.

Dan Fairburn (AKA Poppa Smurf) was voted the players player of the tournament.

The club hopes to run a similar event later in the season if there is a gap in the calendar.

Paige attends talent development camp:

Paige (front) trains with Annaleise Faint.
In mid February the national  Talent Development camps were held throughout New Zealand.  Paige Stantiall from our club was fortunate enough to be selected to attend the Lower North Island one in Palmerston North.
20 children aged 7 to 13 stayed at the Massey University Rugby Institute and did fitness training there or on court work at Squashgym Palmerston North during the Friday night, all day Saturday and Sunday camp.  It wasn't all work, they even had time for a swim at the Lido Aquatic Centre.
Paige says she attended last year so knew what to expect and enjoyed it despite this and found it beneficial.  She would like to thank the sponsors involved and a special thanks to the coaches.

Early season tournament at Feilding:

A small group of Rangitikei players dusted off their rackets for the early season tournament in Feilding.
The heat, warm ball and early season lack of squash fitness showed in the mixed results!

Champion of Champions:

Picture
Two members of the Rangitikei squash club travelled to Auckland last weekend for the inaugural
National Champion of Champions. Sally and Lily Stantiall were part of the Central team to play at the Henderson squash club. Over 70 players from around the country converged on West Auckland to battle it on court. Sally fought hard in all her games and managed to place 6th in the C grade competition. All of Lily's playing and training paid off and the promising young junior placed 2nd in the E grade. It was a fabulous experience for them both and we hope that they have inspired our club members to aim for making the central team, next year when the Champion of Champions is held in Christchurch.

This is the trophy we have had made to donate to Squash NZ for the National Champion of Champions - this is the E grade ladies one. Thanks go to Marie & Wayne Ward of Roadrunner Bulls for the awesome job they made of making it (photo not too good but it's cut stainless steel!).
Also good luck to Lily and Sally Stantiall who are travelling to Auckland to contest the ladies E & C grade respectively. We hope you can bring that trophy back home Lily - no pressure of course!

Regional Champion of Champions was played in Wanganui last weekend.
We had  a team of 7 players representing Rangitikei.
Unfortunately the men were unable to make the finals but our women held their end up with three of them making finals.  Sally Stantiall played hard matches which she managed to win, coming away with the C grade title.  Lily Stantiall also had hard matches but lost her final in 5.  Pauline Slovak was outplayed in the final against Squashgym's Karen Casey.
All winners have been invited to play in the National Champion of Champions being hosted by the Henderson club in Auckland 23-25 November.  Lily has been invited to attend too.
The very best of luck to Sally and Lily, we know you will represent our club and our district well.

Teams Tournament wrap up:

The final night of the SRVS teams tournament came down to the wire in 2 divisions.

A night of 2 all draws in The Equine Division left On The Ball as outright winners with Geed Up a close second.  In the Canine Division the Young Bucks went into the final round ½ a point ahead of The Rayners, both teams had 4/0 wins which left the Young Bucks the winners by ½ a point.  In the Bovine Division when  the last games went on the it could have resulted in a 3 way tie, fortunately (for tournament control) the Jet Propelled Chess Club came thru and won by 1 point, The Stantialls came a close second.

The Best Team Name went to the Jet Propelled Chess Club, The Most Supportive Team went to Team Ostapchuk and the Best Dressed Team went to Bryan’s Boasters.  The Sportsmans prize went to Isaac Greer and the Newbie prize went to Kelly Greer.

Thanks to Southern Rangitikei Vet Services for sponsoring and Camille for organising the prizes.
